Kwaku Ananse Kintê is a self-taught visual artist who primarily works with painting on canvas. The artist uses the representation of Black individuals as the main motif in his work, exploring themes of spirituality, racism, and the historical erasure of the Black population in Brazil. Additionally, he incorporates tilework as the background in his paintings. In his works, tilework symbolizes erasure and invisibility, which is then disrupted by a solid color that speaks to emptiness and non-existence.
As an important element in constructing the identity of his works and complementing his research, he seeks references in African and Afrodiasporic cultures.
Over the years, Black people have been relegated to underpaid jobs characterized by low wages, job insecurity, and the absence of labor rights. These underpaid jobs are often precarious and undervalued, reflecting the exploitation and marginalization of these individuals in the labor market. Furthermore, cases of slavery-like labor still emerge in contemporary times, highlighting a troubling persistence of practices that deny human dignity and perpetuate the legacy of slavery.
Physical violence is also a reality faced by Black people in Brazil. Murders, assaults, and unjustified arrests are often directed at this population, always motivated by racism. It is alarming to see the devaluation of these crimes by society, reflecting a lack of empathy and the normalization of racial violence. This tragic and unjust reality requires a critical analysis of social structures and a search for solutions that promote justice and equality.
Kwaku Ananse Kintê invites us on a profound journey of reflection about the slave period and the persistent influence of colonialism to this day. He observes how the massive presence of Black people in jobs considered subordinate, such as the maintenance and cleaning of these cultural elements, reflects the absence of references to their own culture, customs, and history.
